Guttering work by Select Roofing Services, Merseyside

Gutter Specialists Across Merseyside

Gutters are the most overlooked part of a roofing system — and the most consequential when they fail. A blocked or damaged gutter doesn’t just look untidy: it's one of the most common root causes of damp, rotted fascias, damaged brickwork and even foundation problems, and it's almost always preventable with proper maintenance.

We work across the whole of Merseyside — Formby, Southport, Crosby, Liverpool, Ormskirk, Maghull, Hightown, Ainsdale and Birkdale — offering the full range of gutter services from a single annual clear to a complete system replacement.

Most gutter-cleaning businesses do exactly that and nothing more — clear the blockage and leave. As roofers first, we look at gutters differently: persistent overflow or leaking is very often a symptom of something else entirely — a roof pitch issue, a failed flashing, a sagging bracket run, or a downpipe that was never sized correctly for the roof area it serves. We investigate the cause, not just clear the symptom, which is the difference between a fix that lasts and one you'll be paying for again next year.

Cleaning & clearing

Hand-cleared and vacuum-cleared gutters and downpipes, removing leaves, moss and silt. Recommended annually, more often near mature trees or on exposed coastal properties.

Repairs

Leaking joints, cracked sections, loose brackets and sagging runs repaired using proper materials — including cast iron systems on period properties, common across Ormskirk, Birkdale and inner Liverpool.

Full replacement

Complete uPVC guttering systems with proper falls to downpipes, fitted alongside fascias and soffits where needed for a complete roofline finish, backed by our 10-year written guarantee.

Roofers first, gutter specialists second

Unlike gutter-only cleaning companies, we can identify and fix the roofing causes behind persistent gutter failure — not just the symptom in front of us.

What Poorly Maintained Gutters Actually Cause

Fascia and soffit rot

Overflowing water runs down behind the fascia board rather than away from the property, rotting timber fascias from behind — often invisible until the damage is severe. See our fascias & guttering guide for more.

Damp and penetrating damage

Water running down external walls from a blocked or damaged gutter is one of the most common causes of damp patches appearing inside a property, sometimes rooms away from the actual source.

Foundation and pathway damage

Water discharged at the base of a wall rather than into a proper drain can, over years, affect foundations and cause pathways and patios to heave or crack.

Roof space and insulation problems

Water forced back under roof tiles by a blocked gutter can saturate loft insulation and, over time, cause the same rafter and felt damage as a direct roof leak. See our guide on preparing your roof for winter.

Gutters — Frequently Asked Questions

How often should gutters be cleared?

Once a year for most properties, typically in autumn after leaves have fallen. Properties surrounded by mature trees, or in exposed coastal spots like Southport, Ainsdale and Crosby, often benefit from a second clear in spring.

How do I know if my gutters need repairing rather than just clearing?

Signs include visible sagging between brackets, water running down the outside of the gutter rather than through it, staining on the wall below, and joints that leak even when clear. If clearing alone doesn't stop the overflow, it's a repair issue, not a blockage.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace my gutters?

If the guttering is under roughly 15 years old with only localised damage, repair is usually the more economical option. Beyond that age, or with widespread sagging and cracking, full replacement is often better value over time than repeated repairs.

Do you repair cast iron guttering, or only replace with uPVC?

We do both. Cast iron guttering, common on period properties across Ormskirk, Birkdale and inner Liverpool, is genuinely durable and often worth repairing properly rather than replacing outright. We assess it honestly rather than defaulting to replacement.

What's the difference between you and a dedicated gutter-cleaning company?

We're roofers first. A gutter-only company can clear a blockage, but if the real cause is a roofing issue — a failed flashing, incorrect pitch, or structural sag — they can't diagnose or fix it. We look at the whole picture, not just what's visible in the gutter.
